What is International Speed Post / EMS?
International Speed Post, often called EMS (Express Mail Service), is India Post’s premium international courier service for:
- Documents (passports, agreements, certificates, etc.)
- Small parcels and merchandise (subject to rules)
- Shipments to many countries worldwide
For domestic service, see: Speed Post Consignments Guide .
International Speed Post Tracking Number Format
Most International Speed Post / EMS tracking numbers follow the 13-character UPU format:
EE123456789IN
- First 2 letters → service code (for example, EE, EA, EM, etc.)
- Next 9 digits → unique article number
- Last 2 letters → country code (for India, IN)
This same number is usually recognised by the destination country’s postal website once the article reaches there.

Tracking on Destination Country Postal Website
Once your shipment reaches the destination country, its local postal operator usually continues scanning it. You can often use the same tracking number on:
- The destination country’s official postal website
- Universal tracking websites that combine multiple postal systems
Example: An EMS article to the USA may be trackable on both India Post tracking and USPS tracking sites.

Customs Hold, Import Duties & Delays
For international parcels, customs clearance is often the main reason for delay. Some common situations:
- Awaiting Customs Inspection – Shipment queued for screening/checking.
- Customs Duty Assessed – Recipient may have to pay import duty/taxes.
- Held by Customs – Documents Required – Additional invoices, ID or clarifications requested.
- Returned due to Prohibited Item – Contents violate import rules of destination country.
In customs-related cases, you may need to contact the destination country’s customs or postal operator directly.
How Long Does International Speed Post Take?
Delivery time for International Speed Post depends on:
- Destination country
- City vs rural / remote area
- Customs clearance time
- Holidays and flight availability
Typically, many EMS routes deliver within 3–7 working days, but customs or remote locations can extend this considerably.
For domestic time frames, refer to: Speed Post Delivery Time .
Common International Tracking Issues & What to Do
1. Tracking shows “No Record Found”
Usually means the article has not yet had its first scan or the number is mistyped. Check the receipt carefully and try again after some time.

2. Stuck at “Item Bagged / Dispatched from India” for many days
Flights, customs, or destination handling may be causing delay. Also check the destination country’s postal website.
Steps:
- Wait a few more days, especially during holiday season.
- Cross-check tracking on the destination postal site.
- Visit or call your booking post office with the receipt.

3. Status shows “Delivered” but receiver has not got it
This can happen at either end (India or destination country). Ask the recipient to:
- Check with local post office using the same tracking number.
- Ask if it’s left at a neighbour, reception, or collection point.
- Request proof of delivery if available.
If unresolved, sender may need to file a formal complaint: India Post Complaint Help .
4. Returned from Destination Country / Customs
If tracking shows the item being returned to India, reasons may include:
- Prohibited contents
- Unpaid customs duties
- Incorrect or incomplete address
Once it comes back to India, track and contact the relevant Indian post office for collection or re-dispatch options.
Packing & Declaration Tips for International Shipments
- Always declare contents honestly on the customs form.
- Check whether your item is allowed in the destination country.
- Use strong packaging to survive long-distance handling.
- Write full address with correct postcode / ZIP code.
- Include receiver’s phone and email when possible.
For domestic packing help, see: Parcel Packing Guidelines .
When Should You File a Complaint?
For International Speed Post, consider raising a complaint if:
- Tracking is unchanged for a very long time, beyond normal EMS standards.
- Destination postal operator confirms they cannot trace the article.
- Status shows delivered but receiver absolutely did not receive it.
You may need to contact both India Post and the destination postal operator. Detailed guidance: Lost Parcel Complaint Help and India Post Customer Care Help .
