India Post Tracking Status Meaning
Confused by status messages like “Item Bagged”, “Retention Reason” or “Out for Delivery”? This page explains the meaning of the most common India Post & Speed Post tracking events in simple language.
India Post Tracking Status Meaning Explained
When you track a consignment, you may see different status messages at each stage of delivery. These updates show where your parcel is, what process it is going through, and when you can expect delivery. Understanding the meaning of each tracking status helps avoid confusion and gives a clear idea about shipment movement.
| Tracking Status | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Item Booked | The parcel has been accepted at the post office and entered into the system. Tracking usually starts from this point. |
| Item Dispatched | The shipment has left the booking post office and is on its way to the next sorting or transit center. |
| Item Received | The parcel has arrived at another processing center or post office for further routing. |
| In Transit | The article is moving between cities or sorting hubs. This is a normal stage and may last for a few days depending on distance. |
| Bagged / Packed | The parcel has been grouped with other shipments and prepared for dispatch to the next location. |
| Out for Delivery | The item has reached the destination post office and is with the delivery agent. It will usually be delivered on the same day. |
| Delivered | The parcel has been successfully delivered to the recipient. |
| Delivery Attempted | The delivery person tried to deliver the item but could not complete it due to absence or address issues. |
| Addressee Not Available | No one was present at the delivery address. Another attempt may be made later. |
| Returned to Sender | The parcel could not be delivered and is being sent back to the original sender. |
| Item Redirected | The article has been redirected to another address or delivery office. |
Why Tracking Status Sometimes Stops Updating
Tracking may not update in real time at every moment. Sometimes the parcel is moving between cities or waiting at a sorting facility. In such cases, status updates may take 12–48 hours to appear. This is normal and does not mean the parcel is lost.
How to Read Tracking Status Properly
India Post tracking shows the journey of your parcel step by step. Each event usually contains:
- Event name (for example, “Item Booked”, “Item Dispatched”)
- Office name (where the scan happened)
- Date & time of the scan
- Sometimes remarks (reason, special note, etc.)
Below is a human-friendly explanation of the most common tracking events you may see.
