Tracking Not Updating?

Is your India Post Speed Post or parcel tracking stuck on the same status for many days? This guide explains why it happens, how long you should wait and what steps you can take.

First, Don’t Panic Immediately

It is quite common for India Post tracking to stay on the same status for some time, especially when the consignment is in transit between two cities or sorting centers. Many shipments are still delivered on time even if the online status appears “stuck” for 1–3 days.

However, if the status does not change for a long period or looks unusual, it is wise to investigate further using the steps on this page.

Common Reasons Tracking is Not Updating

Some of the most frequent reasons why tracking appears stuck are:

  • Parcel is in transit between two distant cities with no intermediate scans.
  • Scan data is updated in batches rather than in real time.
  • Network or technical issues at a particular office or server.
  • Heavy load / festive rush causing operational delays in scanning.
  • Address or pincode confusion at the delivery office slowing down processing.

Many of these situations resolve automatically after a short delay, and the tracking suddenly jumps from an older status to a newer one with multiple entries.

Step 1: Basic Checks You Should Do

Before assuming something is wrong with your parcel, verify these points:

  1. Confirm the tracking number: Make sure you are entering all 13 characters exactly as printed on the receipt (for example, EE123456789IN).
  2. Check on another device/network: Sometimes browser cache or network issues can cause temporary problems.
  3. Re-check delivery time: Compare your booking date and route with typical timelines from our Speed Post Delivery Time guide.
  4. Verify destination pincode: Use the Pincode Search Tool to confirm you have used the correct pincode.

Step 2: How Long Should You Wait?

How long you should wait before taking action depends on the situation:

Same City / Nearby City

If the parcel is local or within a nearby city, you may expect updates or delivery within a few working days. If there is no change for more than 4–5 working days, you can start checking more actively.

Long Distance / Remote Area

For far-away states, rural or remote destinations, a gap of several days between scans can happen. Waiting 7–10 working days before panicking is usually reasonable unless the situation is urgent.

Remember to exclude Sundays and public holidays when counting “working days”.

Step 3: Check the Last Scanned Post Office

One of the most important clues is the last scanned office shown in tracking:

  • If the last event is at an intermediate transit center, the parcel may still be moving through the network.
  • If the last event is at the destination delivery office, but there is no “Out for Delivery” or “Delivered” update, it might be pending sorting or delivery attempt.

In such cases, you can visit or call the relevant post office with:

  • Your tracking / consignment number
  • Receiver name, address and pincode
  • Booking date and office (if known)

Step 4: When to Contact Post Office or Raise Complaint

You should consider contacting the post office or using official complaint channels if:

  • Tracking has not updated for more than 7–10 working days and is far beyond normal delivery time.
  • Status remains at the same office without any new scans or movement.
  • Tracking suddenly shows a confusing status (for example, “returned to sender”) that you don’t understand.

When you contact the post office, be clear and polite, and share:

  • Full tracking number and last scanned status
  • Sender and receiver details
  • Any urgency (passport, exam admit card, legal notice, etc.)

Special Cases to Watch Out For

Status Shows “Delivered” But Not Received

In this case, you should quickly contact the destination post office with ID proof. Sometimes the parcel is with a neighbour, security guard, or still at the office despite the “delivered” scan.

Status Shows “Returned to Sender”

This usually means there was an issue such as insufficient address, wrong pincode, addressee not available, or refused delivery. Check our upcoming Return to Sender Reasons page for more detail.

Very Old Shipment Still Not Delivered

If several weeks or months have passed, you should treat it as a serious case – keep all receipts, complaint numbers and responses for possible escalation or compensation (if applicable).

Quick FAQs About Tracking Not Updating

My parcel is “In Transit” for 3 days. Is it normal?

Yes, it can be normal, especially for long-distance or remote-area routes. Wait a little longer and keep checking periodically.

Tracking not found. Is the parcel lost?

Not always. It could be a typing mistake, a delay in the tracking system, or an article type that does not support detailed tracking. Verify the number on your receipt carefully.

Should I raise a complaint immediately the next day?

Generally no. Give some time based on the route and typical delivery time. Complaints are more effective when the parcel is genuinely delayed beyond a reasonable period.
