Passport Delivery Tracking

Waiting for your new passport? This guide explains how to track your passport delivery through Speed Post, understand tracking status and what to do if it is delayed or returned.

Important Clarification

IndiaSpeedPost.com is an independent tracking helper website. We are not the official website of India Post or the Passport Office. We cannot change your delivery address or speed up dispatch, but we help you understand and track your Speed Post passport delivery more easily.

How Is the Passport Usually Delivered?

After your passport application is processed and printed, it is usually handed over to India Post for home delivery, typically as a Speed Post article.

  • A unique Speed Post tracking number is assigned to the passport envelope.
  • You normally receive this number via SMS / email or on the passport portal.
  • The same tracking number can be used on our home page to track live status.

Exact process and message format may vary slightly depending on region and current rules.

How to Find Your Passport Speed Post Tracking Number

You may find your passport delivery tracking number from one or more of these sources:

  1. SMS from Passport / Consular services
Often, once the passport is dispatched, an SMS is sent with the Speed Post consignment number.
  2. Email update
Check the email ID used during passport application; dispatch emails sometimes include the Speed Post tracking number or a link.
  3. Passport application portal
Log in to the official passport application / tracking portal and look for “Dispatched” or “Passport sent via post” message. Many times the consignment number is mentioned there.
  4. Call the passport helpline / PSK
If you do not see any number, you may contact the relevant passport office or helpline and ask if a Speed Post number is available.

Track Your Passport Delivery on IndiaSpeedPost.com

Once you have the Speed Post tracking number (for example EE123456789IN):

  1. Go to the IndiaSpeedPost.com home page.
  2. Enter your tracking number in the main tracking box.
  3. Click “Track” to fetch the latest status directly from India Post systems.
  4. Scroll down to see shipment history – each scan from dispatch to final delivery.

If you see no events immediately after dispatch, wait a few hours – the first scan may take some time to appear.

Important Tracking Status Messages for Passports

Some common statuses you may see for passport deliveries:

  • Item Booked: Passport envelope has been booked at origin post office.
  • Item Dispatched / Bag Dispatched: Passport has left the origin facility.
  • Item Received at Delivery Office: Passport is at the local post office near your address.
  • Out for Delivery: Postman is carrying your passport for delivery today.
  • Item Delivered: System shows that passport has been delivered.
  • Retention Reason: Door Locked / Addressee Not Available: Delivery attempted but unsuccessful.
  • Item Returned to Sender: Passport is being returned to issuing authority due to non-delivery.

Passport Delivery Delayed – What Should You Do?

Because passports are important documents, delays can be stressful. Here’s a practical approach:

  1. Compare with usual delivery time
For most domestic routes, Speed Post delivery takes a few working days. Refer to Speed Post Delivery Time for typical timelines.
  2. Check if tracking is updating
If tracking is stuck for several days at the same status, follow the steps in Tracking Not Updating Help .
  3. Look at the last scanned office
Note the last post office mentioned in tracking and contact/visit that office with your ID and tracking number.
  4. Contact passport authorities if needed
If the parcel is extremely delayed or lost, you may also need to contact the passport helpdesk or regional office in addition to India Post.

If You Missed Passport Delivery (Door Locked / Not Available)

If tracking shows a retention reason like “Door Locked” or “Addressee Not Available”:

  • Visit the delivery post office as soon as possible with your ID proof.
  • Show the tracking number and explain that you missed the delivery attempt.
  • Ask if the passport is still held at the office and request hand-delivery at the counter or next delivery attempt.

Tracking Shows “Delivered” but Passport Not Received

This situation must be handled quickly because it involves an important identity document:

  1. Visit the delivery post office mentioned in the last tracking event.
  2. Carry a valid photo ID matched with the passport details (Aadhaar, voter ID, etc.).
  3. Request the delivery sheet / proof of delivery to see who signed for the passport.
  4. If the signature is unknown or disputed, raise an immediate written complaint with the post office.
  5. Inform the passport authority / helpline if the issue is serious or unresolved.

Passport Article Lost or Not Traceable

If the article appears lost or cannot be traced by the post office:

  • File a detailed complaint with India Post, mentioning that the consignment contains a passport.
  • Keep copies of booking details, tracking screenshots and complaint numbers.
  • Simultaneously contact the passport issuing authority to ask for their recommended next steps (re-issue process, FIR requirement, etc.).

Which Post Office Handles My Passport Delivery?

The delivery office is usually shown in your tracking events (for example, “Item Received at XYZ SO / DO”). You can then:

  • Search that office name in Google Maps, or
  • Use its pincode and area to locate it.
