Wrong Address / Wrong Pincode in Speed Post

Entered the wrong address or pincode in your India Post or Speed Post article? This guide explains what usually happens and what you can still do to reduce the damage.

Important Note

IndiaSpeedPost.com is an independent help website. We cannot modify your address or intercept any article. Only the respective post offices and official systems can take action on a live consignment. This page gives you practical guidance on what to ask and whom to contact.

What Happens If the Address or Pincode Is Wrong?

Depending on how wrong the details are, the article may:

  • Travel to the wrong city or wrong post office first.
  • Get delayed while sorting staff try to manually correct the address.
  • Show tracking events from an area that has nothing to do with the receiver.
  • End up under “Retention Reason: Insufficient / Incorrect Address”.
  • Be finally Returned to Sender (RTS) if delivery is not possible.

For detailed RTS reasons, see: Return to Sender Reasons .

Common Types of Address & Pincode Mistakes

  • Correct address, wrong pincode (for example, 560034 vs 560043)
  • Wrong house number or flat number
  • Missing landmark / apartment name
  • Incomplete address – only area name written
  • Receiver’s mobile number missing / wrong

Some of these are minor and may still be fixed by staff, but others can completely stop delivery.

Case 1 – Correct Address, Wrong Pincode

This is the most common mistake. What usually happens:

  • Article first travels along the route of the wrong pincode.
  • At some office, staff notice that the area name does not match the pincode.
  • They may:
    • Correct the pincode manually and redirect, or
    • Hold the article and mark retention with remarks, or
    • Return to sender if confusion is high and address is unclear.

To avoid this in future, always verify pincodes using: Pincode Search Tool .

Case 2 – Wrong or Incomplete Address (Area / House No. Wrong)

If the house number, street name or locality are wrong or missing:

  • Postman may not be able to locate the house.
  • Tracking may show: “Retention Reason: Insufficient Address / Addressee Not Found”.
  • If nobody contacts the post office in time, the article may be returned to sender.

If you are the receiver and you see such retention messages, visit the delivery office quickly with ID proof and tracking number.

If You Are the Sender & Realise the Mistake Early

If you just booked the article and quickly notice the wrong address/pincode:

  1. Visit the booking post office with the:
    • Original receipt
    • Tracking number
    • Correct address details
  2. Request the counter staff or Postmaster to check whether the article is still at the office.
  3. If article has not yet been dispatched, they might:
    • Correct the address manually on the cover, or
    • Cancel and re-book (depending on rules and stage).

Whether change is allowed or not depends on the timing and local postal rules.

If You Are the Receiver & Address Is Wrong

If someone has already dispatched the article with wrong details and you are the receiver:

  1. Get the tracking number from the sender.
  2. Track it on IndiaSpeedPost.com .
  3. Note the latest office shown in tracking.
  4. Call or visit that post office and explain that:
    • Address / pincode written is wrong.
    • You are the actual receiver with correct address and ID.
  5. Ask if they can:
    • Update the address on the article, or
    • Allow you to collect the article directly from the office.

This works best when the article is already at the correct city and under “Retention”.

If Article Is Already Returning to Sender

If tracking shows “Item Returned to Sender”:

  • The article is on its way back to the sender’s address.
  • Receiver usually cannot stop or reverse this during transit.
  • Once the sender receives it back, they can re-book with correct details.

More on this process: Return to Sender Reasons .

How to Prevent Wrong Address / Pincode Issues

  • Always verify the pincode using a reliable tool: Pincode Search Tool .
  • Write full address: house number, street, locality, city, state, pincode.
  • Add a clear landmark for tricky or new areas.
  • Print the address in block letters if handwriting is not very clear.
  • Always write the receiver’s mobile number on the parcel.

When Should You File a Complaint?

Even if the original mistake was in the address/pincode, you may still raise a complaint if:

  • Staff behaviour was rude or unhelpful while you tried to correct it.
  • Tracking shows delivery to a completely unrelated place despite mostly correct address.
  • The article is lost / untraceable and you suspect mishandling.
